Welcome to My Humble Office Space

I was inspired to share my office space based on a tweet from Mac Deryng, where he shared his podcast/teaching/office space.  We bought our house around 4 years ago and a prerequisite was that I had to have my own office.  At first it was pretty bland with a standing pipe framed desk I built, but not much else.  That was good for awhile, but had no storage and it didn’t have any way to display items I care about.  I set out with a budget and IKEA by my side to pull it all together.  Beyond the storage, the only other thing I wanted was a white board of my very own.

White Not So Board

I enjoy modern design and I love backlit items.  So when it came to designing a white board for my office I wanted it to not just be a white board on a rolling stand.  I wanted it to be a unique center piece on the wall.  So my father and I built a frame to space it off the wall.  Additionally it was framed in white LEDs which had their wiring run to a 12volt power supply on the other side of the room.  The power supply was then hooked to a smart outlet to allow them to be turned on and off via Alexa.  The whiteboard material was from Post It and came in a 4′ x 6′ sheet.  This was all framed out in some basic molding to hide the edges and the LEDs.  We then finished the wall in a ship lap type material from Lowes.

This Desk Seems “Counter” Intuitive

Wanna know a secret, my desk top is a counter from IKEA I cut to fit. Not only can I study on it, it is also a mean buffet table!  It is braced from below with a skeleton we built to ensure you didn’t see any supporting structure.  I mean if you get low enough you could….but then you’d be dumb.  All the wiring for all of the lights and cables for the monitors were all run through the walls and situate under the desk in a cable management tray.  There are 11 individual cabinets all arranged in the pattern you see below.  We left four open with LED lights for display purposes.

You Have Reached the End of this Episode of Cribs
